Fogg Dam just west of Kakadu National Park, Australia.
This is part of my Top End series from a two week holiday in the dry season. For those outside Australia, the 'Top End' is the area in the Northern Territory near Darwin. The area includes some pretty amazing places including the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land, the Litchfield National Park and Nitmilik National Park to name a few.
I tend to only give flower photos a cursory glance, but this one gave me pause and held my attention.
The way you framed the photo in post-processing works really well. I like the crisp sharpness of the petals, and the contrast of their shape and color to the rounded lilies. The center of the flower seems to border on being too bright, but you can still see the stamen well enough, and obviously this brightness helped draw me to the image in the first place.
The muted light in the background, and the capture and position of the flower's shadow is perfect. I also like that the boundary between air and water is not always clear, which helps give the image a slightly ethereal and peaceful feel.
I must admit the longer you look at it however, the more dirt and imperfections become apparent on the lilies. While this gives it a real world feel, it subtracts a little from the “ picture perfect ” image you might consider putting up on your wall at home. This might sound odd, and may not have been possible, but slowly pushing some of the lilies into the water with a stick might have helped wash some of the dirt off, and left interesting water drops on them when they came back to the surface. (This is something I have seen someone do!)

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
